Investor Highlight: Tiger Global Management

If you’ve been reading our funding highlights, you may have noticed this particular investor pop up a lot. Tiger Global Management can be cited as one of the most aggressive funders of late and according to our data, the firm has participated in over 70 deals in 2021 already.

The company has the second-largest venture fund at $6.7BN, and its investment speed is being compared to Softbank’s early days (a story for another day), helping it secure strategic investments much faster than its competitors. Tiger also differs from other VC firms that often work closely with the founders to grow their company, instead of paying the companies it has invested in to work with consultants like Bain & Co. to scale. According to an investor letter that was sent in January 2021, the firm has a gross internal rate of return across its 12 previous funds of 32%, while its net IRR is 24%.

Here are some of Tiger’s portfolio company success stories: 

• It invested in insurance company Root Insurance, which went public in Nov 2020
• Its JD.com investment is said to have returned over $5BN for the firm 
• Its sale of Flipkart to Walmart is said to have reaped the firm $3BN
• Its 20% ownership in Peloton at the time of its IPO in 2019 was worth nearly $2BN

• Robotic process automation SaaS company UiPath, who is pursuing an IPO comparable in size to Snowflake's
• Data management SaaS Databricks, who is rumored to be IPO'ing soon
• E-commerce platform Checkout.com from the UK
• E-commerce platform Squarespace, who just filed for a direct listing
• Chinese edtech company Zuoyebang
