Normally, real estate investors have a lot of money or have access to a lot of money, which is necessary to acquire properties that generate rental income. Meanwhile, REITs (real estate investment trusts) can be risky investments, flipping houses isn't as easy as it looks, and many investment opportunities are only available to accredited investors. However, there's a growing tide of real estate investment options for the little guys and gals, with real estate investing available for as little as $10.

Groundfloor just became the first real estate crowdfunding platform to gain regulatory approval from the SEC. The company has invested heavily into legal engineering to develop new laws and regulations that help would-be investors get in on the–well–ground floor. Other investment platforms include Fundrise and RealtyMogul. These companies allow thousands of people to own pieces of office buildings, retail spaces, and rental properties without substantial investment dollars.
