Funding for Diverse Leaders in 2021

Today, we’re releasing our second annual PrivCo report on the state of funding for diverse leaders, Funding Diversity. We pulled the data to examine the total funding raised in 2021 for underrepresented categories of founders and contextualized our findings in the broader economic, political, and cultural landscape. Did societal demands for greater equity and inclusion materialize in 2021? The answer is yes and no.

Despite record funding overall, the percentage raised by women and POC remains small and far from representative of the broader population. Still, 2021 was a milestone year of growth overall for diverse leaders and diversity in VC investors.

The report showcases 2021’s unicorns founded by diverse leaders, including all-in-one business neobank Brex, database collaboration tool Airtable, agricultural technology company Indigo Ag, and workforce skills enhancement platform Guild Education, among many others in automotive/transportation, fintech, consumer products/retail, technology, and HR/compliance.
