Limited Partnership
In a limited partnership, limited partners are those who are passive investors and who don't actively participate in the partnership's decisions, but who receive distributions of dividends and profits from the partnership. A limited partner (aka an "LP") usually refers to an investor in a private equity fund, while the general partner is the private equity firm (that is, the investment management company who decides which companies to acquire and who then oversee management of its "portfolio companies.
